Vice Mayor Convicted of Operating a Gambling House
February 7, 2007

Morrow Village Vice Mayor York Bryant was recently convicted of allowing casino-style gambling on his property. According to the Dayton Daily News, York installed several "video poker style" machines in his restaurant: Papa's Restaurant. The machines, along with $320 in cash, were confiscated after a waitress at the restaurant paid undercover agents who were playing the machines. This is York's second gaming offense since 1989. York claims to have been told that the machines were legal so long as no one was paid more than they put in the games. This felony conviction also disqualifies York from serving on the Village Council.

Tribal Land Claim Negotiations Fail
February 7, 2007

According to a recent article in the Lima News, the deadline for settlement negotiations between the parties to the land claim filed by the Eastern Shawnee of Oklahoma against the State of Ohio and several municipalities has passed. Attorney General Marc Dann's office has indicated that even after good-faith negotiations, the present situation does not lend itself to a mutually agreeable settlement. Lima law director Tony Geiger is quoted in the article as stating that the Tribe and the State were very close to reaching an agreement as of last week, but Dann's office finally closed the negotiations. The Tribe continues to negotiate with Lima over possible development of a casino site.
